Watercolor and Collage – A Match Made in Heaven,

with Miriam Hughes

April 2 (10 AM-3 PM ET) 2022

Saturday, April 2nd (10am-3pm ET) 2022- $135 includes all materials, but feel free to bring anything from your own stash!

In this workshop we will learn how to revive, recreate and even start new watercolors, by adding collage elements to our paintings. We will also discuss how to recover from mistakes, either fixing them or incorporating them into your work. For beginners create watercolor sketches and learn how to go further with collage!

For those who have worked in watercolor, do you have a pile of watercolors where something just did not work, but you hate to throw it away? Or are you often faced with the decision to “do more” with a painting, but aren’t sure what more could be?

Watercolor is the perfect medium to mix with collage using a variety of exotic, handmade papers. We will incorporate papers from a variety of sources from old lottery tickets, newspapers, wrapping papers and even labels from our favorite (or not so favorite foods). Start collecting now and bring some of you own papers, however this workshop includes supplies and paper from Miriam’s treasure trove.

All levels of experience will enjoy this workshop and if you don’t have a stockpile of questionable work, we will create some pieces in class as your starting point!

We care about your safety! See our classroom safety protocols below

Painting Little Treasures - Miniature Quartets in Gouache, watercolor, and Ink

with Miriam Hughes

May 14th (10 AM-3 PM ET) 2022

Saturday, May 14 - 10 am to 3 pm - $145 all materials included and a frame for your favorite piece!

Working small does not have to be tedious or overly detailed. Creating a series or a theme and working small is a rewarding way to explore new mediums. Either working in one medium alone or mixing the water-based mediums available, we will create small treasures from 1” – 4” square. Learn how to create a powerful composition in a tiny space and leave with frameable artwork. One frame per participant is included in the fee. The frames are all 5” square with a 3.75”” open space for the image.

This workshop explores the value of creating a series of small paintings which tells a story (the seasons, blossoming of a flower, etc.) or be abstract with a continuous link between each piece. Let your imagination unfold as we create petit quartets.

Series work can lead to fascinating subject explorations!

The class fee includes watercolor paints, brushes, paper and other supplies but please feel free to bring other similar supplies that you would like to try out. More frames can be purchased in class or ordered on line.

We care about your safety! Please see our safety procedures below.

Favorite Pet - an Exploration in Mediums with Miriam Hughes,

March 5th (10 AM-3 PM ET) 2022

$135.00

Please read our new safety guidelines below as recommended by the CDC. Thank you for helping us keep everyone safe. Participants must be vaccinated.

Saturday, March 5th (10am-3pm ET) 2022- $135 includes all materials but please feel to bring other materials you would like to try!

Learn how to create the same subject in four different mediums.!

Working from photographs of your pet(s), you will create four distinct and varied pieces of art. One will be a drawing, then watercolor, collage and the final created in a medium of your choice - a combination of the three you have already learned.

Our subject matter (your dog, cat, mouse or bird) will be created in a similar size for each piece so that you can display them together. Allowing our selves to work in several mediums using the same subject matter is an excellent way to push yourself out of boundaries in art you may have set up for yourself.

Be prepared for a fun and energizing workshop as we explore and create!

The Color Wheel Demystified

The Color Wheel Demystified with Miriam Hughes, June 22, 7pm ET

colorwheel.jpg

from 30.00

Class Description

Paint your own lovely color wheel that has both function and beauty. Using a traced decorative wheel in a mandala design, you will use your own palettes to make a huge variety of colors to guide you and delight you!! We will send you the template, some instructions to print before class, and the link to the class when you register.

Frame your color wheel if you like and keep it handy for quick color mixing references!

This class will be a bit longer than our usual watercolor class, so be ready with your set up, the traced wheel, some snacks and have fun painting with Miriam! Invite a friend!

WHY IS THE COLOR WHEEL SO IMPORTANT?

1. You will learn to create 48 colors with three tubes of paint and a tiny bit of black.

2. By creating your own color wheel you will learn how to mix colors, how much water or pigment to use to get the effect you want and how to use complementary colors instead of blacks or just adding more of the same color to make it dark enough (it does not work that way in watercolor)

3. You will begin to want to create more color wheels with different primary base colors to learn what your favorite palette is and how to create new color palettes in your work.

4. You will save money on paint!

See suggested materials list below

Duration: Class may run longer depending on the number of participants. Class will consist of live demonstrations with students working along with the instruction. There will be time for questions and answers.

Please make sure you can attend the class you signed up for as we cannot transfer tuition. Due to privacy issues we will not be able to distribute videos of these live classes. Thank you.

Supply List

  • Watercolors – a minimum of three colors – red, yellow and blue.  I use a variety of watercolor brands and types but tubes are essential for this workshop: Ultramarine Blue, New Gamboge (yellow)  or a yellow of your choice but no cadmium colors, and Crimson (or any red, yellow or blue) Additional colors of your choice are encouraged.

  • One tube of Black (Peach Black) or Payne’s Gray

  • A number #10 or #12 Simply Simmons Round Watercolor (or whatever you have as long as it is a round) Watercolor paper – I use 140lb Arches Cold press paper.  It has a tooth to it, absorbs colors well.  Right now use what you have but results will vary on cheaper paper.

  • Water – any source is good, and a water container

  • A large flat surface to mix your paints – a palette or several white plates (paper or plastic)

  • Paper towels – about three sheets in a pile 4”x4” square will be fine.  Scrap paper to test colors is helpful

  • Tracing paper or carbon paper. Or you can turn the printed wheel over and cover the back with soft graphite (6B to 8B pencil) Turn back over and draw the lines on your watercolor paper. Clean up smudges with an eraser.

Spring Bouquets in Watercolor and Pen & Ink

Spring Bouquets in Watercolor and Pen & Ink with Miriam Hughes, Friday, June 4, 5PM ET

tu;ip3.jpg

from $25.00

Class Description

Sometimes the most ordinary scene that you look at every day is a true work of art!

Often people have heard that watercolor is hard to control - in this workshop I will show you how to enjoy and master the simplicity of sketching with watercolor. Working from live still life bouquets we will discuss composition, line work and new ways of presenting a tried and true subject. Creating a series of sketches in watercolor (live or from photos) will hopefully trigger the desire to add sketching to your daily routine!

Often I will have ten watercolor sketches that I come back to and add the ink. This process helps you to remain loose, see the shapes and values and not get tied down to a perfect drawing. We will be using our eyes and hands and not letting the brain and judgments interfere with the process!

Duration: Class typically runs for 120 minutes, but may run longer depending on the number of participants. Class will consist of live demonstrations with students working along with the instruction. There will be time for questions and answers.

Please make sure you can attend the class you signed up for as we cannot transfer tuition. Due to privacy issues we will not be able to distribute videos of these live classes. Thank you.

Supply List

Watercolors – three colors – red, yellow and blue. I use a variety of watercolor brands and types – tube or pan. I like using QOR by Golden, but there are so many choices so use what you have: Ultramarine Blue, Hansa Yellow and Pyrrol Scarlet from Daniel Smith are used in the video. You can find good paint options by clicking here and here.

  • A number #10 or #12 Simply Simmons Round Watercolor Brush is only $5-7. The brand is important only because different brands with the same number information can be different sizes. But use what you have if you can’t get out. Click this link for a good example of brushes - you will only need the #12 but others are good to have as well.

  • Watercolor paper – I use 140lb Arches Cold press paper. It has a tooth to it, absorbs colors well and receives the ink easily, all which are important factors to me. Right now use what you have but results will vary on cheaper paper. Sometimes that is good too! PAPER is so expensive. I prefer to buy it by the sheet and tear it down to the odd sizes I need. It is cheaper to but 10 sheets at a time (for me). This is a good alternative for beginning. Get what you can afford for right now. I tear the sheets in half as you will see in the workshop. Click this link for a good paper option

  • Black pen for inking afterwards – I use IDENTI.PEN from Sakura. I use the fine point only. The ink is permanent. The tip of this pen is vinyl and holds up against the grain of the watercolor pen. You can use any pen and/or pencil you desire. I just like this one - I buy ten at a time. You can purchase it here.

  • Water container and water – any source is good

  • Paper towels – about three sheets in a pile 4”x4” square will be fine. You need this to dab your brush and check your water /color volume sometimes.

Class Description

Using the seven-step watercolor gouache resist process we will create delightful amphibious creatures. Working in 8”x10” format I will take you through the step-by-step process of creating graphic-looking frogs, toads and even turtles. Nature offers so many design qualities which are perfect for this process. Gouache Resist is a fascinating 7-10 step process that results in a vibrant, wood-block style painting!

Choose your own references to create the drawing, or work from your own froggy pets! This class takes longer than our usual watercolor classes, so have a cup of tea ready and relax and enjoy a creative afternoon! Class time is listed for 2 1/2 hours. Length of time may vary depending on the number of participants.

Duration: Class may run long depending on the number of participants. Class will consist of live demonstrations with students working along with the instruction. There will be time for questions and answers.

Bugs & Beetles in Watercolor, Gauche, and Metallic Paints

Bugs & Beetles in Watercolor, Gouache and Metallic Paints with Miriam Hughes, April 20th at 7PM ET

bugs_02.jpg

from $25.00

Class Description

Using all water media paints we will explore the fascinating beauty of beetles and bugs! You either love them or hate them but bugs make for amazing artwork whether it is realistic or our own graphic and artistic interpretations.

Often insect artwork is presented as a illustration and the challenge for us will be to not only recreate our own images and interpretations’, but to work on composition. We will ask ourselves how we can make this more than just a pretty picture. What will draw people into our idea of beautiful bugs?

Feel free to use transparent watercolors or the more opaque medium of watercolor gouache. We will also explore how to effectively use metallic watercolors as part of the painting. Additional mediums like pen, ink, markers and even a teeny bit of collage will be discussed and encouraged!

Duration: Class is usually 90 minutes but may run longer depending on the number of participants. Class will consist of live demonstrations with students working along with the instruction. There will be time for questions and answers.

Spring Chickens with Bouquets in Watercolor

Spring Chickens with Bouquets in Watercolor with Miriam Hughes, April 2 at 1PM ET

springchicks_03.jpg

from $25.00

Class Description

Watercolor painting is not hard when you are creating Crazy Chickens with their own Spring Bouquet!

Miriam will unleash your wild side, ruffle some feathers and have you avoiding frustration and despair as you learn about mixing colors with a new approach. In this class you will learn how to mix colors both on your palette, and also on the watercolor paper. Letting the colors flow and mix with one another on the page are parts of the magic of this workshop. We will be creating wild chickens without drawing the first. The freedom of using a #10 -#12 Round watercolor brush forces you stay loose with your brush strokes and avoid using the brush as a drawing tool.

Once the colors are placed, we will come back with black ink and highlight the value changes in your work, While it looks initially like you are outlining your painting you will discover the magic of seeing and creating shapes and the energy of your chickens.

Understanding the importance of white space, the value of your own unique marks and allowing yourself to remain loose and having fun while learning are goals of this class.

Duration: Class is usually 90 minutes but may run longer depending on the number of participants. Class will consist of live demonstrations with students working along with the instruction. There will be time for questions and answers.

Paint your Pets in Watercolor and Pen&Ink with Miriam Hughes, March 5th at 1PM ET

Dog+in+watercolor+310+molly.jpg

Class Description

Working from a photograph, we will learn how to draw and then paint a portrait of your dog. A few key tricks on how to measure the eyes to the ears to the nose to the snout will be covered.

Our drawing will be relatively loose. The next step will be to paint in watercolor both the dog and the background. Often times, back grounds are thrown in as a filler, or they distract from the image. We will learn how to be as conscious of the background as we are of the subject.

The final step will add the inking process as we carefully bring the energy and spirit of the dog alive on paper.

All you need to bring is a picture of your dog and I will help you complete an amazing watercolor and pen and ink painting in 3 hours!

Glazing and Layering in Watercolor with Miriam Hughes, Feb 26th at 1PM ET

glazing_01.jpg

Class Description

Glazing or layering colors is a fundamental technique in watercolor painting. When you paint, the transparent layers of pigment build up, one on top of the other. This layering of paint changes, enhances and deepens the values and the color appearance of the final painting.

We will create a glazing chart and also create a small watercolor using the techniques discussed in creating the chart. Working from a demo piece we will each explore out favorite color palettes to change the look of the final artwork.

Duration: Class is usually 90 minutes but may run longer depending on the number of participants. Class will consist of live demonstrations with students working along with the instruction. There will be time for questions and answers.

Please make sure you can attend the class you signed up for as we cannot transfer tuition. Due to privacy issues we will not be able to distribute videos of these live classes. Thank you.

  • Watercolor paper – I use 140lb Arches Cold press paper. It has a tooth to it and absorbs color well, both of which are important factors to me. You can use what you have but results will vary on cheaper paper. Sometimes that is good too!

  • Water – any source is good, and a water container

  • Paper towels – about three sheets in a pile 4”x4” square will be fine.

A few key tricks on how to measure the eyes to the ears to the nose to the snout will be covered. Our drawing will be relatively loose, so all levels can have fun with this class! Crazy Chickens Watercolor Class

Online Art Class

Tuesday, October 13th

7 pm EDT

with Miriam Hughes

Chicken+with+Yellow+Hair+Watercolor+with+pen+&+ink+$15..jpg

Watercolor painting is not hard when you are creating Crazy Chickens! Miriam will unleash your wild side, ruffle some feathers and have you avoiding frustration and despair as you learn about mixing colors with a new approach.

In this class, you will learn how to mix colors both on your palette and on the watercolor paper.  Letting the colors flow and mix with one another on the page are parts of the magic of this workshop. We will be painting wild chickens without drawing them first. It sounds frightening to begin without a drawing, however, that is the magic of the class. The freedom of using either a #10 or #12 round watercolor brush forces you to stay loose with your brush strokes and avoid using the brush as a drawing tool.
After the colors are placed, we will return with black ink and highlight the value changes in your work. It looks initially as if you are outlining your painting and you will discover the magic of seeing and creating shapes evoking the energy of your chickens. I call it “in-lining”. Understanding the importance of white space, the value of your own unique marks and allowing yourself to remain loose and having fun while learning are goals of this class.

We will meet live on Zoom the week of these classes and focus on learning how to use the brush, mix colors from three colors and enhance your work in ink. There is a fee for individuals and one for a family. Once you pay, you will be emailed an invitation for the Zoom classes, typically within 24 hrs. of purchase. This will be a separate email from the order confirmation that you will receive immediately after purchase.

Online Art Class

Friday, August 21, 1 pm EDT

Sometimes the most ordinary scene that you look at every day is a true work of art. Often people have heard that watercolor is hard to control. In this workshop I will show you how to enjoy and master the simplicity of sketching with watercolor. Working from images we see through our kitchen windows, on our windowsills, or even on the kitchen table we will learn how less can be more. Creating a series of sketches in watercolor (live or from photos) will hopefully trigger the desire to add sketching to your daily routine.

Often I will have ten watercolor sketches that I come back to and add the ink. This process helps you to remain loose, see the shapes and values and not get tied down to a perfect drawing. We will be using our eyes and hands and not letting the brain and judgments interfere with the process.

5. Water – any source is good, and a water container

6. Paper towels – about three sheets in a pile 4”x4” square will be fine.
